Guaranteed snow, perfectly groomed slopes, and skiing right outside the hotel door: Obertauern impresses in international comparisons and, according to a recent analysis by the British tour operator Inghams Ski, secures first place among Austria's ski resorts. Across Europe, the Salzburg winter sports destination achieves an excellent second place – just behind the Italian winner.

With 92.9 out of a possible 100 points, Obertauern clearly leads the Austrian ranking. In a European comparison, only Pontedilegno-Tonale in Italy, with 93.1 points, comes in slightly ahead. Les Arcs in France takes third place with 92.2 points. For the study, Inghams Ski analyzed more than 100 popular ski resorts in the Northern Hemisphere and evaluated data from seven winter seasons between 2017/18 and 2025/26. The focus was not solely on snowfall, but primarily on the actual reliability of ski operations. Factors assessed included the number of days with at least 30 centimeters of snow at the base station, slope operation during the peak season, and the consistency of conditions over several years.

This is precisely where Obertauern can showcase its strengths. The reliable snow conditions and extensive range of slopes make the region a sought-after destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Another advantage is the numerous ski-in/ski-out accommodations, which allow direct access to the slopes. "Anyone who comes to Obertauern will find snow, slopes, and operating lifts, season after season," says Mario Siedler, Director of the Obertauern Tourism Association. The fact that the region missed out on the top European ranking by only 0.2 points provides additional motivation.

With this top result, Obertauern underlines its position as one of Austria's leading winter sports destinations. According to the study, those who want to plan their ski vacation with guaranteed snow will find particularly reliable conditions here.
