Tauplitz – Bad Mitterndorf
Tauplitz – Bad Mitterndorf
Authentic – where Heinrich Harrer was once a ski instructor
The nearby Altaussee located region of Tauplitz – Bad Mitterndorf describes itself as an authentic ski area: This is because it is located on a sunny terrace in alpine terrain and mostly above the tree line - and because the alpine pasture is car-free in winter and public transport is provided by piste machines and Skidoos. Tauplitz has also been an old winter sports area ever since forester Hiob Engl and teacher Ferdinand Sulzbacher succeeded in skiing down the notorious "Lawinenstein" on the Tauplitzalm for the first time in December 1905. In 1911 the Austrian Ski Championships were held here, and in 1931/32 the well-known mountaineer and later Tibet researcher Heinrich Harrer followed the call of the Tauplitzalm, which had become famous in the meantime, and worked there for two years as a hut warden, mountain guide and ski instructor. In 1935 the young ski instructor Viktor Hierzegger constructed the first drag lift in Austria.
Thanks to its favourable geographical location, Tauplitz is one of the areas in Austria with the highest snow reliability. Records show snow depths of up to five metres, and in March there is often more than three metres of snow. This makes the Tauplitzalm a real paradise for sunny skiing in spring. Nevertheless, snowmaking capacity has been continually expanded on Tauplitz and a new one-kilometre-long piste connection was recently built. The 43 kilometres of naturally undulating slopes are between 820 and 1,965 metres above sea level, offer all levels of difficulty and have something for every taste and ability. At least six kilometres are black slopes - the Schneiderkogel, Osthand-Krallersee and Mitterstein slopes. In addition to two marked ski circuits, the Tauplitz mountains also offer plenty of natural snow and space for deep snow descents and are a well-known natural freeride area where freeride camps are also held from time to time. The mix of challenging and easy slopes, free ski space and relaxing on one of the many sun terraces is what makes Tauplitz so special. You can also go on ski tours into the Totes Gebirge from here.
The wide, fog-free basin Around Bad Mitterndorf, cross-country skiers can also enjoy a network of 176 kilometers of groomed classic and skating trails, as well as around 15 kilometers of winter hiking trails. There is also the option of night tobogganing - and the Grimming Therme in Bad Mitterndorf is a point of contact for anyone who values a comprehensive spa and wellness experience. Also worth mentioning is the free ski bus between Bad Mitterndorf and Tauplitz, as well as the car-free Tauplitzalm village at an altitude of 1,650 meters with around 1,000 guest beds, rustic huts and restaurants, and also the affordable ski packages for families.
