Nassfeld
Carnic Impressions at their Finest
The Carinthian Gailtal Nassfeld near Hermagor is one of the most beautiful and diverse areas in Austria and attracts many Italians and international guests as well as Austrians. It is also the largest ski area in Carinthia and the one where the most investment is made in improvements - from the hotel industry to the piste infrastructure - including the expansion of the snow-making systems. Most recently, 63 snow cannons and lances were purchased, a new storage pond was built, new piste machines with snow depth measurements were acquired, the Tessdorferalm practice area was adapted, cash registers were remodeled, additional ticket machines were installed, customer information was improved and eco-ski tickets were purchased. The snow-making system was further optimized by purchasing new snow machines that increase energy efficiency by 100 percent compared with the old machines: an important contribution to energy saving and sustainability. With the Nordic Competence Center in Tröpolach, with a snow-covered cross-country ski trail and laser biathlon facility, the company also wants to position itself more strongly as an alpine training hotspot in the future. Also worth mentioning is the inexpensive express ski/board service on the mountain in the Kofelcenter Madritsche - and great events such as Music meets Sun, where DJs and live acts perform at seven dates and locations over several weeks. On 110 kilometers of slopes between 610 and 2,200 meters above sea level, everyone gets their money's worth, whether young or old, professional or beginner. Once the first hurdle - the Millennium Express valley station, which is sometimes quite full at peak times - has been overcome, an extensive ski area and shorter waiting times await.
On the less frequented slopes you can often get on the lift straight away - and off you go. Snowboarders in particular have many opportunities to ski in the deep snow next to the pistes and under the lifts. Nassfeld also has an excellent snow park and halfpipe for boarders and trick skiers. Kids can look forward to The Wave, a two-kilometer-long course with steep curves, waves and jumps. A classic from the Gartnerkofel, which offers a great panoramic view, is the Felsenkröpfel and FIS run. Also worth mentioning are the Sattel run from the Rudnigsattel or the Schnittlauchkofel run, which starts at the 2,020-meter-high Troghöhe - incidentally the highest point on the Nassfeld. And if you need a break in view of the abundance of pistes and kilometers of descents, there are numerous appealing places to stop for a break - from rustic Carinthian to typically Italian.
Since the area extends over several peaks, you can also follow the sun. In the afternoon, for example, head towards Gartnerkofel to spend the rest of the day skiing in the sun, while the area between Madritsche and Troghöhe is already in the shade. On the sunny side facing Italy, there is also a freeride area in the Garnitzen Alm area. However, given the sunshine, you should not forget to set off in good time towards the Carnia valley run, for which you have to tackle several ascents and descents via Kofelplatz-Madritsche, Mössern and Rudnigalm. On the way there, a speed measuring track and a Ski Movie race track beckon on the Troghöhenabfahrt and the Rast valley station. And at the end, the 7.6-kilometer-long Carnia piste awaits with an altitude difference of 1,212 meters down to the Millennium-Express Tröpolach valley station. This is a real workout for your legs.
