It's just as it should be in spring: although the higher mountains still boast a respectable blanket of snow, the ski season eventually comes to an end. However, this doesn't mean you have to forgo the comfort of gondolas. Firstly, because summer operations begin in many parts of the Alps in May \u2013 and secondly, because the same is true in other parts of the world.<\/strong> There are exciting gondola rides.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in our latitudes cable cars are symbolically associated with winter sports, Austria's leading manufacturer and \u2013 in competition with the South Tyrolean company Leitner, which also produces partly in Austria \u2013 global market leader Doppelmayr has long since found other pillars of the business. Cable car solutions are relatively well-known in urban transport in hilly cities, but it is surprising when cable cars in the tropics become an attraction in themselves or open up artificially created adventure worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most extreme example of the Austrian company's expansion is largely unknown at home: Vietnam. Planes land in Phu Quoc not only when winter reigns in the Northern Hemisphere. Even the new airport sometimes suffers from overcrowding. The cable car pylons of the "artificial world" at the southern end of the island near An Thoi are already visible on approach. At approximately 8 kilometers long, the cable car from Phu Quoc across the sea and small islands to Hon Thom represents a global superlative: there is no longer 3S gondola lift in the world without an intermediate stop. The cable car is based on Doppelmayr technology, as are a total of 32 other Doppelmayr cable cars throughout Vietnam. The largest customer is the Sun Group, which is also responsible for Doppelmayr's two cable car world records: It not only owns the Hon Thom amusement park, but also erected the world's tallest cable car pylon (214.8 m) in northern Vietnam. This enables the suspended connection from the mainland to Cat Ba (on Halong Bay). But the Vorarlberg-based cable car manufacturer is also doing good business with the second Vietnamese tourism giant, Vinpearl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eOur orders in Vietnam already total \u20ac500 million,\u201d reveals Khanh Hoa Bui, CEO of Doppelmayr Vietnam, in an interview \u2013 a more forthcoming figure than the company headquarters in Wolfurt. They estimate that the investment in Doppelmayr technology represents less than one percent of the clients' total investments. In other words, the corporations have invested over \u20ac500 billion in facilities for hotels, transportation, and amusement park infrastructure. Anyone can easily see this for themselves, because after the exhilarating boat trip across the sea, one arrives at Hon Thom not only at an amusement park, which, in addition to an enormous water park, also features a wooden roller coaster and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of the island is still a construction site, with hotels of various brands \u2013 Marriott, Accor \u2013 some of which are only partially completed as shells. Parts of this tropical paradise and some beaches are therefore currently inaccessible. The "highlight" of the project, the 200-meter-high Aspira Tower, is slated to be erected on the coast by the 2027 Pacific Rim Conference. Visitors \u2013 primarily Koreans, Russians, and Indians, in addition to Vietnamese \u2013 are treated to three loud shows by the sea in the evening upon returning to the main island of Phu Quoc. These shows can be viewed from the restaurants or the "Kiss Bridge." The theme chosen here is "Amalfi," which is quite successfully modeled on the Italian original in some parts. The cable car station, however, is clearly inspired by the Roman Colosseum. The "Santorini" section (on Hon Thom) requires a bit more imagination\u2026 But guests who don't want to spend \u20ac50 at the Sun Group's ticket booths for a day at the amusement park without staying overnight generally seem to enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Austrian technology, nestled amidst the Vietnamese setting and the Mediterranean influences of the theme park, is only noticeable to insiders. However, Khanh Hoa Bui emphasizes: "Our cable cars connect destinations, but Doppelmayr Vietnam also strives to be perceived as a bridge between the cultures of Vietnam and Austria." To this end, the company co-organized two classical music programs at the end of 2025: a concert at the Music Academy and a performance of The Magic Flute at the Hanoi Opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
